Across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) millions of people are standing up for their rights, defying tear gas, tanks and gunfire to demand an end to poverty, corruption and unaccountable state power and brutality. They are calling for a future where human rights are respected and protected. Amnesty International has for decades documented human rights abuses and campaigned for reform in the MENA region. Since the popular uprisings began, we have intensified our efforts to document abuses committed by armed forces, security forces and non-state actors throughout the region, supporting the protesters demands for basic human dignity. Our design is intended to capture the popular uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa in an artistic way. It above all symbolizes grassroots movement-the backbone of the uprisings-but also growth, inspiration and peaceful protest. Finally, the indicated fist is a powerful symbol of strength and defiance.
